GRAVITY DIE CASTING
PRECISION AND STRENGTH FOR
DEMANDING COMPONENTS
When maximum mechanical performance and a flawless surface are required, gravity die casting is the process of choice.
Particularly for safety-critical components such as chassis parts or surface-sensitive applications, gravity die casting is an excellent solution. This process is used to manufacture aluminum components that must withstand the highest loads while offering a perfect surface finish.
Contact
The Gravity Die Casting Process
In gravity die casting, we use permanent metallic molds – known as dies – that allow for precise and repeatable shaping. Due to the rapid heat dissipation in the metal mold, the cast parts develop a fine-grained microstructure with excellent mechanical properties, ensuring high dimensional accuracy and an outstanding surface finish. These characteristics make gravity die casting the ideal solution for medium to large production runs of demanding aluminum components.
- Superior Strength: Rapid cooling in metallic molds produces a fine-grained structure that gives cast parts exceptional mechanical properties—ideal for highly stressed components.
- Perfect Surface Quality: The metallic mold material creates a smooth and flawless surface, making the process particularly suitable for visible and surface-sensitive applications.
- High Dimensional Accuracy: The stability of the dies ensures tight tolerances and repeatable accuracy – essential for safety-relevant components.
- Flexibility in Alloy Selection: We process all common European-standard and special alloys, enabling us to achieve precisely the material properties your component requires.
- Expertise in Composite Casting: Grohmann is a leader in composite casting, where aluminum is combined with other metals to meet specific requirements for strength, conductivity, or corrosion resistance.
Gravity Die Casting vs. Other Processes
Compared to sand casting, cast forging, or die casting, gravity die casting is distinguished by the use of permanent metallic molds that ensure rapid and uniform cooling. This results in a finer microstructure and smoother surfaces.
Unlike sand molds, metallic dies are reusable and allow for economically efficient production in medium to high volumes.
Gravity die casting is therefore the optimal choice for components with demanding requirements in dimensional accuracy and mechanical strength.
